The Last of Us Will Continue for at Least 3 Seasons, Says Mazin

The Last of Us will continue for at least three seasons, according to new remarks from executive producer Craig Mazin. During an interview with Deadline, Mazin said, “It’s going to be more than one season. There’s more story, so this show will not end with season 2 unless people don’t watch it and we’ll get canceled.”

Mazin continued, discussing whether the HBO show would remain faithful to the video game source material. “Barring that, we will be doing some things exactly the way they were in the game. We’re going to do other things that are in the game and we’re gonna do some things that are in the game but we’re gonna do them differently in our own method. No matter if you have played the game or not. You will be surprised as the season unfolds. We have some interesting twists and turns.”

The Last Of Us Recently Scored Big At The Emmys

The hit drama series scored 24 nominations for the 75th Primetime Emmys, including its recognition in major categories such as Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor for Pedro Pascal’s performance as Joel, and Outstanding Lead Actress for Bella Ramsey’s portrayal of Ellie. Guest stars Anna Torv, Melanie Lynskey, Nick Offerman, Murray Bartlett, Storm Reid, Keivonn Montreal Woodard, and Lamar Johnson were also nominated in their respective categories.

“The live-action series takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed,” per the synopsis. “Joel and Ellie, a pair connected through the harshness of the world they live in, are forced to endure brutal circumstances and ruthless killers on a trek across a post-pandemic America.”

The series, which was renewed for season 2 in January, is executive produced and co-written by Mazin and original video game writer Neil Druckmann, who is also serving as one of the directors. It is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television in association with PlayStation Productions. Executive producers are Carolyn Strauss, Naughty Dog President Evan Wells, and PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan.
