Netflix Ad-Free Basic Plan Removed in the US and UK

Netflix has restructured its subscriptions by removing the ad-free basic plan in the US and UK. The Basic Plan cost $9.99/month in the US and £6.99/month in the UK. The removal of the Basic Plan in these two countries comes one month after Netflix eliminated the same plan in Canada.

On Netflix’s “Plans and Pricing” page, it reads,” The Basic plan is no longer available for new or rejoining members. If you are currently on the Basic plan, you can remain on this plan until you change plans or cancel your account.”

The Hollywood Reporter reached out for comment from Netflix, but the streamer declined.

Which Netflix Plans Are Available For Purchase?

With the removal of the Basic Plan, three Netflix subscription plans are available for purchase. These include Standard with ads for $6.99/month, Standard for $15.49/month, and Premium for $19.99/month. Standard and Premium are ad-free plans. Plus, subscribers can purchase extra member slots for $7.99/month.

The elimination of the Basic Plan comes on the precipice of Netflix’s Q2 2023 earnings call, scheduled for after the market closes on Wednesday. This will force customers to subscribe to the ad-supported tier or pay double for an ad-free package.

Netflix’s ad-supported tier launched in late 2022, and in May 2023, the streaming service reported Standard with ads has almost 5 million active users. On its Q1 2023 earnings call, Netflix said the ad-supported plan produces a higher revenue per customer than the Standard plan.

Netflix’s ad-supported plans are available in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
