Christopher Nolan on Directing James Bond: ‘It Would be an Amazing Privilege’

Christopher Nolan may never direct another Batman film, but the director has had his eye on another famous hero, James Bond.

Would Christopher Nolan Direct a James Bond Movie?

While speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, host Josh Horowitz bet the Oppenheimer director $20 that he will direct the next Bond movie. After laughing at the bet, Nolan revealed his admiration for the iconic character.

“I love those movies. The influence of those movies in my filmography is embarrassingly apparent,” Nolan said. “I love the films, and it would be an amazing privilege to do one.”

Nolan has never been shy in his admiration for 007. In 2017, Nolan said he would “definitely” direct a James Bond movie, admitting he has spoken to Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. Nolan acknowledges that working in the Bond universe has limits, similar to when he directed The Dark Knight trilogy.

“When you take on a character like that you’re working with particular set of constraints, you have to have the right attitude towards that,” Nolan said. “It has to be the right moment in your creative life where you can express what you want to express and really borrow into something within the appropriate constraints because you would never want to take on something like that and sort of do it wrong. It’s a kind of responsibility I also felt very much when taking on Batman.”

The Bond producers are searching for their next 007, with Daniel Craig moving on from the franchise. When asked if he would want to be involved in the casting process, Nolan said he would want to be involved in “everything.”

“You wouldn’t want to take on a film not fully committed to what you can bring to the table creatively,” Nolan said. “So as a writer, [in] casting, everything.”

Horowitz mentioned that Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who worked with Nolan on Tenet, is one of the rumored choices to play Bond. Nolan smiled, calling Taylor-Johnson a “great actor.”

Nolan’s next film, Oppenheimer, opens in theaters on July 21.
