Five Nights at Freddy’s Movie Rating Revealed, Features ‘Bloody Images’

The upcoming Five Nights at Freddy’s movie will be rated PG-13.

Universal Studios’ Five Nights at Freddy’s movie has secured a PG-13 rating for “strong violent content, bloody images, and language,” according to Film Ratings. The film, directed by Emma Tammi and produced by Blumhouse Productions, arrives in Oct. 2023.

What is Five Nights at Freddy’s about?

Based on the popular video game series, Five Nights at Freddy’s was originally going to be released by Warner Bros. Pictures. However, the film went through several delays and the rights ultimately went to Blumhouse in 2017. Chris Columbus was initially tapped to direct and co-write the project but later dropped out, with Tammi coming in as his replacement in 2022.

“The film follows a troubled security guard as he begins working at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza,” the official synopsis reads. “While spending his first night on the job, he realizes the night shift at Freddy’s won’t be so easy to make it through.”

Five Nights at Freddy’s stars Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio, Matthew Lillard, Mary Stuart Masterton, and Kat Conner Sterling. The script is co-written by Tammi, Scott Cawthon, and Seth Cuddeback, with Cawthon producing the film alongside Jason Blum.

While some fans wanted a hard-R Freddy’s, Blumhouse Productions has a long history of PG-13 movies that have been both critically and financially successful. So far this year, the production company put out M3GAN and Insidious: The Red Door, both of which earned PG-13 ratings. M3GAN made approximately $181 million at the worldwide box office; Insidious: The Red Door, which has not yet completed its theatrical run, has grossed $158.1m so far.

Five Nights at Freddy’s releases in theaters and on Peacock in the United States on Oct. 27, 2023.
