Recent A24 Budgets are Reportedly ‘Out of Control’
A24 is one of the hottest and most well-known companies in the world of film and television now, but a recent report suggests that their budgets for movies have gotten a bit high.
A24 has a handful of expensive projects coming up
According to the most recent episode of The Hot Mic podcast with hosts John Rocha and Above the Line’s Jeff Sneider, Sneider mentioned that he’s heard from a source that A24’s most recent films have had some “eye-popping” budgets.
“They basically said that A24’s budgets are out of control,” said Sneider. “They spent $75 million on Alex Garland’s Civil War, which is a little bit more commercial for A24…they said they spent $70 million on Beau is Afraid.”
Sneider went on to mention that Julio Torres’ upcoming Problemista starring Tilda Swinton has a budget of $12 million and that Celine Song’s 2023 film Past Lives also had a budget of $12 million.
He went on to mention that his source said that “the deals that A24 signed with Showtime and with Apple made them think that streamers are going to pay a ton of money for their movies because of the A24 brand,” Sneider continued. “But the truth is that streamers aren’t paying those kinds of figures anymore, so now A24 has a very expensive slate on its hands.”
A24’s most recent release is the 2023 horror film Talk to Me. Up next for the company is Thomas Hardiman’s murder mystery film Medusa Deluxe, as well as The Iron Claw, a film about the life of the Von Erich wrestling family.
