Kraven the Hunter Director Describes Marvel Movie as a ‘Tragedy’

The upcoming Kraven the Hunter movie won’t be following the blueprint of classic superhero films, with its director calling the upcoming film “a tragedy” in a recent interview.

Speaking to Esquire, J.C. Chandor equated the movie to a tragedy, saying that both he and star Aaron Taylor-Johnson pulled from the characters’ more dark undertones in Marvel Comics as a source. By the end of the film, said Chandor, he hopes fans know Kraven’s story won’t be a hopeful one.

“Sony probably doesn’t want me to lead with this, but the story is a tragedy,” said Chandor. “When the final credits roll on this film, if you’ve been paying attention, you won’t have the feeling that this is all going to end great.”

Fans hoping to know more will have to wait a bit, however. After originally being planned to release on October 6, 2023, the film was recently pushed back to August 30, 2024, as a result of the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

What do we know about Kraven the Hunter?

Kraven the Hunter will feature Taylor-Johnson (Avengers: Age of Ultron) as he takes on the mantle of the titular Spider-Man villain, a Russian immigrant named Sergei Kravinoff. In the film, which is being billed as the next chapter of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, he goes on a mission to prove that he is the greatest hunter in the world.

Joining Taylor-Johnson in Sony’s R-rated Marvel movie is Fred Hechinger (Fear Street Trilogy, The White Lotus) as Chameleon, Kraven’s half-brother; Oscar nominee Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) as Calypso, the occasion partner and lover of Kraven; and Russell Crowe and Levi Miller in undisclosed roles. Christopher Abbott and Alessandro Nivola have also been tapped as the main villains.

Kraven the Hunter is directed by Oscar nominee J.C. Chandor (A Most Violent Year) from a screenplay co-written by Richard Wenk (The Equalizer films), Matt Holloway, and Art Marcum. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are producing the project.
