House of the Dragon Season 2 ‘Jam-Packed With Emotional and Visually Exciting Events,’ According to Director

House of the Dragon co-director Clare Kilner shares what viewers can expect from the “visually exciting” second season.

Adapting George R.R. Martin’s novel into a television series might not be an easy task. But the creatives behind House of the Dragon exceeded expectations with the success of the first season. It earned positive responses from audiences and critics alike, with a current 93% average score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Of course, that sets the bar high for the show’s second season. Luckily, one of the show’s directors can confirm that Season 2 will be an emotional yet visually compelling television experience.

What Fans Can Expect From Season 2?

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Kilner discussed what went into creating the first season — as well as a brief explanation of what Season 2 will offer. When asked why the next season would only have eight episodes instead of ten, the director responded:

“There are eight wonderful episodes with so much happening in every episode, and we have trouble, at times, bringing them down to one hour,” she said. “[Ryan Condal’s] decision was to give it a good opening and a good ending, and they’re jam-packed with emotional and visually exciting events.”

Kilner also shared the scene from Season 1 she’s most proud of, saying, “Episode nine, when [Eve Best’s Rhaenys spectacularly interrupts a royal coronation on her dragon]. That was obviously a huge sequence, and I vividly remember grabbing the mic and screaming to all the supporting artists and actors, “The dragon is coming!” to whoop everyone up.”

House of the Dragon is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, chronicling the rise and fall of the dragon-riding Targaryen family. The first season stars Paddy Considine as King Viserys I Targaryen, Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen, Emma D’Arcy as Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen, Rhys Ifans as Ser Otto Hightower, Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon, Eve Best as Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, Sonoya Mizuno as Mysaria, and Fabien Frankel as Ser Criston Cole, among others.

House of the Dragon Season 2 does not have a release date yet, but it is expected to premiere sometime in 2024.
