Loki Season 2 Producer Explains How McDonald’s Fits Into the Show’s Storyline

The crossover between Loki and fast food chain McDonald’s is something some fans would have never expected to come to fruition. But series producer Kevin Wright says the story arc — which will see Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) working at McDonald’s — is a significant part of the show’s narrative.

A Love Letter to Nostalgia

In an interview with Fast Company, the producer explained that adding McDonald’s into the storyline would provide a unique perspective on Sylvie, a character driven by anger and revenge for the longest time. And by exploring the simple joy of nostalgia, the story arc would see the character enjoying even the most ordinary of things.

“This character had been on a decades-long, maybe centuries-long revenge mission, and the classic trope of those stories is that it’s all-consuming, and she’s not thinking about what comes next,” Wright said. “Now she has this moment of opportunity, where is she going to go? When we stayed in the view of the character, this woman who went on the run as a child, had been running through time, a fugitive of time, living in apocalypses, never being able to relax or slow down, the novelty of walking into a 1980s McDonald’s looked appealing.”

Wright added that they wanted to tell a profound story that would establish the character’s desire for ordinary happiness.

“I was worried that McDonald’s would think we wanted to do something ironic or make fun of them. But we were selling an earnest story, a love letter to nostalgia through a character’s eyes who will see all of the novelty and joy of it,” he also told Fast Company.

The God of Mischief’s Solo Adventure Continues With Season 2

Set to premiere on Disney+ on October 6 — with new episodes airing Fridays — the second season of Loki will feature the return of Tom Hiddleston as the titular anti-hero.

The official synopsis reads: “Loki Season 2 picks up in the aftermath of the shocking season finale when Loki finds himself in a battle for the soul of the Time Variance Authority. Along with Mobius, Hunter B-15, and a team of new and returning characters, Loki navigates an ever-expanding and increasingly dangerous Multiverse in search of Sylvie, Judge Renslayer, Miss Minutes, and the truth of what it means to possess free will and glorious purpose.”
