The Exorcist: Believer Is Looking to Set a New Box Office Record for the Franchise
The Exorcist: Believer is looking to set a new opening weekend box office record for the franchise.
According to Deadline, The Exorcist: Believer is tracking to bring in approximately $30 million during its opening weekend. That puts it on track to match the opening weekend for 2022’s Scream, which debuted to $30 million (2023’s Scream VI, comparatively, made $44.4 million on its opening weekend), and slightly above 2022’s Candyman, which opened to $22 million.
Should the predictions come to fruition, The Exorcist: Believer will have the highest opening weekend out of any movie in The Exorcist franchise. Exorcist: The Beginning currently holds the record with $18 million, followed by 1990’s The Exorcist III with $9.3 million, 1977’s Exorcist II: The Heretic with $6.7 million, 1973’s The Exorcist with $1.9 million, and 2005’s Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist with $140,700.
What happens in The Exorcist: Believer?
“Since the death of his pregnant wife in a Haitian earthquake 12 years ago, Victor Fielding (Tony winner and Oscar nominee Leslie Odom, Jr.; One Night in Miami, Hamilton) has raised their daughter, Angela (Lidya Jewett, Good Girls) on his own,” the film’s synopsis reads. “But when Angela and her friend Katherine (newcomer Olivia O’Neill), disappear in the woods, only to return three days later with no memory of what happened to them, it unleashes a chain of events that will force Victor to confront the nadir of evil and, in his terror and desperation, seek out the only person alive who has witnessed anything like it before: Chris MacNeil.”
Halloween’s David Gordon Green directed and co-wrote the screenplay alongside Peter Sattler for The Exorcist: Believer, which is intended to kick off a new trilogy of Exorcist movies. The second, The Exorcist: Deceiver, is currently set to release in April 2025.
The Exorcist: Believer releases theatrically on October 6, 2023.
