American Fiction Release Date Delayed for Jeffrey Wright Movie

American Fiction has pushed its release date back from November to December.

Per Variety, MGM and Orion Pictures announced American Fiction has pushed back its release date by approximately a month. The movie was originally planned to be released in limited theaters on November 3 before expanding on November 10 and 17; however, it will now get a limited release on December 15 before expanding to more theaters on December 22.

Based on a 2001 novel by Percival Everett titled Erasure, American Fiction is written and directed by Cord Jefferson. While this marks’ Jefferson’s directorial debut, he was a writer and executive story editor on 2019’s Watchmen series and The Good Place. He also served as a consultant on HBO’s Succession.

What is American Fiction about?

“Monk is a frustrated novelist who’s fed up with the establishment that profits from Black entertainment that relies on tired and offensive tropes,” the official synopsis reads. “To prove his point, he uses a pen name to write an outlandish Black book of his own, a book that propels him to the heart of hypocrisy and the madness he claims to disdain.”

Asteroid City and The Batman’s Jeffrey Wright plays Monk in American Fiction. Starring alongside him are Tracee Ellis Ross, Erika Alexander, Leslie Uggams, Sterling K. Brown, Myra Lucretia Taylor, John Ortiz, Issa Rae, Adam Brody, and Keith David.

American Fiction held its world premiere on September 8 at the Toronto International Film Festival. It received positive reviews from critics and took home the People’s Choice Award, thus becoming the first MGM and Orion Pictures movie to ever do so. Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers and Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron were both runners-up.

American Fiction hits select theaters on December 15 before going wide on December 2023 from MGM and Orion Pictures.
