Barbie 2: Margot Robbie Responds to Sequel Speculation

During a recent interview with AP, Oscar nominee Margot Robbie addressed the possibility of returning for a potential Barbie 2 movie, following the critical and commercial success of Greta Gerwig‘s latest feature.

“I think we put everything into this one,” Robbie said. “We didn’t like built it to be a trilogy or something. Greta put everything into this movie, so I can’t imagine what would be next.”

In addition, the Harley Quinn actress also explained the significance of the Barbie movie’s box office success.

“I’d say the biggest takeaway for me is that original films can still hit huge at the box office,” she said. “It doesn’t have to be a sequel or a prequel or a remake. It can be totally original. It can still be given the big budget to do that.”

Robbie continued, “And just because there’s a female lead doesn’t mean it’s not going to hit all four quadrants, which is, you know, I think a misconception that a lot of people still have. So it’s really important that Barbie did well. It’s as much as it is nice, it’s also really important that it does well so people can also in the future have big original ideas, and be given the budget to execute them properly.”

Who made the Barbie movie?

Barbie was directed by Gerwig from a screenplay she co-wrote with Noah Baumbach. It was produced by Robbie and Tom Ackerly for LuckyChap and Mattel Films’ Robbie Brenner along with Josey McNamara and Ynon Kreiz. During its theatrical run, it earned a worldwide gross of over $1.4 billion, making it the highest-grossing movie of 2023.

The film starred Robbie, Gosling, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Scott Evans, Kate McKinnon, Ariana Greenblatt, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, Issa Rae, Michael Cera, Hari Nef, Will Ferrell, Helen Mirren, Dua Lipa, and more. It’s original soundtrack is currently nominated for 11 Grammys, including Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Song Written for Visual Media, with Ryan Gosling receiving his first Grammy nomination for “I’m Just Ken.”
