Denis Villeneuve Says Dune: Part Two is More of an Action Movie Than Part One

Dune introduced the world to Paul Atreides and his mission to unite and save the Fremen people on Arrakis. While the first film focused on exposition, director Denis Villeneuve says Dune: Part Two will be more of a straightforward action film.

“The first movie was more meditative and contemplative. We were following a young man discovering a new planet, a new culture,” Villeneuve said in Total Film magazine. “The second movie . . . it’s more of an action film than the first part. It’s more muscular.”

One of the most buzzworthy scenes from the Dune: Part Two trailer is when Paul rides one of the giant sandworms. Villeneuve mentioned how Dune Part: Two was shot with IMAX cameras to capture these impressive action sequences.

“It was, by far, one of the most technically complex scenes I have done in my life,” Villeneuve said when describing the worm-rising scene.

What to Expect in Dune: Part Two?

“This follow-up film will explore the mythic journey of Paul Atreides as he unites with Chani and the Fremen while on a warpath of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family,” the official synopsis reads. “Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he endeavors to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee.”

Timothée Chalamet reprises his role as Paul Atreides, the Duke of House Atreides. Actors returning for Part Two are Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, and Javier Bardem. New cast members in Part Two include Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha, Léa Seydoux as Lady Margot, Souheila Yacoub as Shishakli, and Christopher Walken as Emperor Shaddam IV.

Dune: Part Two is directed by Villeneuve from a script he co-wrote with Jon Spaihts. The film is based on Frank Herbert’s groundbreaking 1965 sci-fi novel Dune. Dune: Part Two is set to be released by Warner Bros. on March 1, 2024.
