Godzilla x Kong Director Calls New Villain the ‘Greatest Threat We’ve Seen’

Despite being bitter rivals, Godzilla and Kong are set to team up to face a new enemy in the upcoming monster film Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. That enemy is the Skar King, an orange Kong-like creature who seemingly acts as a ruler of Hollow Earth. Director Adam Wingard revealed how the villainous Skar King poses the biggest threat to date for the colossal Titans.

“What’s interesting about this new film is that we go in a direction that I don’t think this series has ever seen before, which is that the Skar King is, in a way, the closest that the human threat has ever been juxtaposed onto a titan itself,” Wingard explained to Total Film. “The Skar King almost represents an upscaled version of the worst parts of humanity, just as Kong represents some of the best parts of humanity. I would say the Skar King is the greatest threat that we’ve seen in these movies. It’s really going to take a full team together to bring it down because it’s too big for just one titan!”

What to Expect in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire?

As the seventh film in the MonsterVerse, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is the sequel to 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong, which Wingard also directed.

The official synopsis reads: “This latest entry follows up the explosive showdown of Godzilla vs. Kong with an all-new cinematic adventure, pitting the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence – and our own. The epic new film will delve further into the histories of these Titans, their origins and the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever.”

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire marks the returns of Rebecca Hall as Dr. Ilene Andrews and Brian Tyree Henry as Bernie Hayes, two characters from Godzilla vs. Kong. The New Empire’s ensemble includes Dan Stevens, Kaylee Hottle, Alex Ferns, and Fala Chen.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is directed by Wingard on a screenplay by Terry Rossio, Simon Barrett, and Jeremy Slater. Wingard, Rossio, and Barrett receive a story credit on The New Empire. Producers include Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni, Brian Rogers, Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, and Eric McLeod. Legendary Pictures will produce, with Warner Bros. Pictures serving as the distributor.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire hits theaters on April 12, 2024.
