Ranger’s Apprentice: Skydance Adapting Fantasy Novel Into a Live-Action Movie

According to Deadline, Skydance is currently in the process of developing a live-action film adaptation of Ranger’s Apprentice, based on John Flanagan’s coming-of-age fantasy series of the same name. In addition, Hidden Figures director Ted Melfi has also signed on to helm and write the project, which the studio hopes to turn into a franchise.

“The Ranger’s Apprentice and its focus on a group of orphans trying to figure out their purpose in the world is timeless, touching and cinematic,” Melfi said in a statement. “It’s exciting to have the opportunity to adapt it for the big screen. It’s a honor to be working with David, Dana, Don and Matt and the whole team at Skydance. These folks are truly passionate cinephiles who make movies for the right reasons.”

What is Ranger’s Apprentice?

The outlet notes that Melfi’s deal with Skydance reportedly cost around 7-figures. The filmmaker is expected to adapt the first two installments of Flanagan’s novel series titled The Ruins of Gorlan and The Burning Bridge. The film will be produced by Melfi and Kim Quinn along with Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger. It is executive produced by Flanagan, while Matt Grimm has been enlisted to oversee the project in behalf of the studio.

Ranger’s Apprentice follows the story of “an orphan named Will who becomes an apprentice to a group of mysterious protectors known as the Rangers,” reads the synopsis. He becomes one of the skilled trackers, archers, and warriors in the service of the King of Araluen. Will strives to keep the Kingdom of Araluen safe from invaders, traitors, and other threats. He is joined on his adventures by his mentor, Halt, and his best friend Horace.”
