Daisy Ridley’s Young Woman and the Sea Scores Theatrical Release

Young Woman and the Sea, a Daisy Ridley-starring movie that was initially supposed to debut exclusively on Disney+, is getting a limited theatrical release.

Per Deadline, Young Woman and the Sea will be released in select theaters on May 31, 2024. While it was originally supposed to go straight to streaming, Disney reportedly opted to put it in theaters after “the movie tested in the high 90s.”

The movie will presumably have a Disney+ release after it finishes its theatrical run, though a streaming release date has not yet been set.

What do we know about Young Woman and the Sea?

Announced in December 2020, Young Woman and the Sea is based on Glenn Stout’s 2009 novel of the same name. The movie is directed by Joachim Rønning, who previously helmed 2019’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and is now working on the upcoming Tron: Ares sequel, which arrives in 2025.

Rønning also co-directed 2017’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales with Espen Sandberg.

“In 1926, before skirt lengths inched above the knee and before anyone was ready to accept that a woman could test herself physically, a plucky American teenager named Trudy Ederle captured the imagination of the world when she became the first woman to swim the English Channel,” a description of Stout’s novel reads. “It was, and still is, a feat more incredible and uncommon than scaling Mount Everest. Upon her return to the United States, Trudy of America became the most famous woman in the world. And just as quickly, she disappeared from the public eye.”

The movie is written by Jeff Nathanson, while Tilda Cobham-Hervey, Stephen Graham, Christopher Eccleston, and Jeanette Hain star in the movie alongside Ridley, who is playing Ederle. Jerry Bruckheimer and Chad Oman serve as producers.

Young Woman and the Sea opens in select theaters in the United States on May 31, 2024.
