Gremlins’ Joe Dante to Direct Reimagining of Little Shop of Horrors, Roger Corman Producing

Joe Dante has been tapped to direct a reimagining of Little Shop of Horrors, Little Shop of Halloween Horrors.

Per Deadline, Dante has signed on to direct Little Shop of Halloween Horrors, a new reimagining of Little Shop of Horrors that’s intended to jumpstart a new franchise.

Roger Corman, who directed 1960’s The Little Shop of Horrors, is producing the new movie alongside Brad Krevoy.

Dante is known for directing films such as 1981’s The Howling, 1984’s Gremlins, 1985’s Explorers, 1989’s The ‘Burbs, 1990’s Gremlins 2: The New Batch, 1998’s Small Soldiers, and 2003’s Looney Tunes: Back in Action.

Little Shop of Halloween Horrors is being written by Charles S. Haas, who wrote the screenplay for Gremlins 2: The New Patch.

“Seymour Krelboin (Jonathan Haze) works in the Skid Row flower shop owned by Mr. Mushnik (Mel Welles),” the synopsis for 1960’s The Little Shop of Horrors reads. “In his spare time, Seymour creates a new plant species he names Audrey Junior in honor of his girlfriend Audrey (Jackie Joseph). Audrey Junior begins speaking and demands to be fed human blood and flesh, convincing Seymour to kill a railroad detective, a sadistic dentist and a trollop. Seymour’s guilt over the deaths forces him to confront Audrey Junior in a final confrontation.

The Little Shop of Horrors was turned into a popular horror comedy rock musical that premiered off-off-Broadway in 1982. The musical was then made into a film, which was directed by Frank Oz, in 1986. The movie starred Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene, Vincent Gardenia, and Steve Martin.

There’s no word yet regarding plot details for Little Shop of Halloween Horrors or how the movie will differ from the original story.
