Personal Life

Freddie Mercury first met Mary Austin, a 19-year-old art student, at a London clothing store in 1969. Their bond was instantaneous, and they embarked on an emotional romance. As Queen soared to stardom over six years, Mary became Freddie’s closest confidante and a constant source of inspiration.

Despite identifying as bisexual later on, Freddie regarded Mary as his ultimate soulmate and even honored her with the timeless ballad bearing her name. In the mid-1970s, Freddie began to explore his sexuality openly and entered into romantic relationships with men, such as David Minns, an American record executive.

However, he still maintained a strong and close bond with Mary. Although their romantic partnership ended, their love and respect for one another remained. Mary continued to be Freddie’s closest friend and confidante until his passing, even inheriting his London mansion as stated in his will.

In 1985, Freddie encountered Jim Hutton, an Irish hairstylist, at a nightclub in London. Their bond was profound and real, leading to a devoted relationship until Freddie’s demise in 1991.
