Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes Box Office Opens Second Best in the Franchise

The Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes box office makes a huge splash in North America and other international markets, including China. It restarts the franchise with promising numbers to set up a bright future. Here’s how the box office numbers look following the opening weekend.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes box office starts strong

The latest Planet of the Apes outing starts with the second-best franchise numbers for the opening weekend domestic box office. It made $56.5 million in its first three days (including Thursday night previews), performing at par with the opening projections.

These numbers beat War for the Planet of the Apes’s $56 million opening and Rise of the Planet of the Apes’s $54.8 million opening by small margins. However, it did not get closer to Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, which had opened with $72 million in 2014.

As per Deadline, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes also made a mark overseas by adding another $72.5 million from international markets, bringing its worldwide total to $129 million.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes China box office surpasses $11 million

China was the biggest contributor to Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ worldwide opening total as it added $11.4 million across the weekend. Furthermore, the movie also topped China’s overall weekend charts as it took the #1 spot, beating multiple Chinese movies, including The Last Frenzy and Formed Police Unit (via Variety).

Other international markets also contributed to the worldwide total, with France adding $7.1 million, Mexico $6.4 million, the UK $4.8 million, and Korea $3.2 million, among others.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will continue to play in theaters throughout May and a good chunk of June. Directed by Wes Ball, it stars Owen Teague as Noa, Freya Allan as Mae, Kevin Durand as Proximus Caesar, Peter Macon as Raka, and others.
