Mad Max Director: ‘There’s No Excuse’ for Tom Hardy & Charlize Theron Feud

Mad Max: Fury Road director George Miller has spoken about the feud between Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron. Ahead of the release of the prequel film Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Miller has opened up about what transpired behind the scenes between the two leads of Fury Road.

George Miller on Tom Hardy & Charlize Theron’s Mad Max feud

George Miller has shed some light on the differences between Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron that ignited their on-set tensions. According to the director, the two actors “were just two very different performers”. Miller added that their different approaches kept intensifying their notorious feud.

Speaking to The Telegraph ahead of the Furiosa premiere, Miller reflected on the old Mad Max feud saying:

“Tom has a damage to him but also a brilliance that comes with it, and whatever was going on with him at the time, he had to be coaxed out of his trailer.”

Describing how that’s different from Theron’s approach, the director continued:

“Whereas Charlize was incredibly disciplined – a dancer by training, which told in the precision of her performance – and always the first one on set.”

Miller tried to look at the positives of it saying:

“I’m an optimist, so I saw their behavior as mirroring their characters, where they had to learn to co-operate in order to ensure mutual survival.”

But he also concluded by stating “there’s no excuse” for how the actors handled things.

His statements more or less confirm the reports and reasons for their feud. As the actors have revealed in the past, their fight got ignited due to the film’s tough production schedule. They have also cited their lack of trust in each other.

In the oral history book, “Blood, Sweat & Chrome,” Fury Road’s crew also revealed incidents that added fuel to the fire. A major point was that Theron would show up on time for the 8 a.m. on-set calls. However, Hardy would arrive hours later and keep her waiting.
