Just Cause Movie: Blue Beetle Director to Helm Video Game Adaptation From David Leitch

After directing last year’s Blue Beetle movie for DC Studios, Ángel Manuel Soto has finally found his next major directorial project in the form of the long-delayed Just Cause movie.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Soto has been tapped to helm Universal Pictures’ live-action Just Cause movie, based on Square Enix’s action-adventure video game series. Prior to Soto, a few directors have tried their hand at developing the film adaptation, including Rampage’s Brad Peyton, John Wick creator Derek Kolstad and Stuber’s Michael Dowse. The latest iteration of the project is being produced by The Fall Guy team David Leitch and Kelly McCormick through their 87North banner, as part of their first-look deal with Universal Pictures.

What is Just Cause about?

The Just Cause game is a third-person action shooter, which launched in 2006. It centered around secret agent Rico Rodriguez, who, in each installment, travels to a country which is controlled by a dictatorship. Upon arrival, he goes on deadly missions with the main goal of bring down the nation’s dictatorship, and end the fighting between multiple factions across the island. Following its debut, the best-selling video game franchise had spawned three more game sequels.

The film adaptation will be executive produced by Dan Jevons, with Dmitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg and Timothy I. Stevenson serving as producers for Story Kitchen. Max Jacoby, Ryan Jones and Tony Ducret have been enlisted to oversee the project. Besides the Just Cause movie, Soto is also currently attached to another high-profile action movie titled The Wrecking Crew, which will be led by Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista.
