300 Series in the Works, Zack Snyder in Talks to Direct

A 300 television series adaptation is in the works from Warner Bros. Television.

Per Variety, Warner Bros. Television is in “early development” on a 300 television series.

Plot details remain under wraps at this time, though it could reportedly serve as a prequel to the original film, which was directed by Zack Snyder.

While Variety notes that “deals are still being negotiated,” Snyder is in talks to direct and executive produce the 300 series. Deborah Snyder is also in talks to executive produce the show alongside Wesley Coller.

What is 300?

300 was originally a Dark Horse comic book series created by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley that was launched in 1998. Snyder made a feature film based on the comics that was released in United States theaters in March 2007.

It starred Gerard Butler as Leonidas, David Wenham as Dilios, Lena Heady as Queen Gorgo, Michael Fassbender as Stelios, Dominic West as Theron, and Rodrigo Santoro as King Xerxes.

“In 480 B.C. a state of war exists between Persia, led by King Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro), and Greece,” the synopsis reads. “At the Battle of Thermopylae, Leonidas (Gerard Butler), king of the Greek city state of Sparta, leads his badly outnumbered warriors against the massive Persian army. Though certain death awaits the Spartans, their sacrifice inspires all of Greece to unite against their common enemy.”

In 2014, Warner Bros. released 300: Rise of an Empire, which serves as both a prequel and a sequel to 300. Directed by Noam Murro and co-written by Snyder, the film starred Sullivan Stapleton, Eva Green, Headey, Jack O’Connell, and Santoro. Butler and Fassbender both appeared in archived footage from the original movie.

No writer is yet attached to the new 300 series. 300 is currently streaming on Hulu, while 300: Rise of an Empire is available to watch on TNT, TBS, and TruTV.
