Box Office Results: Garfield and IF Seize Control From Furiosa

The summer movie season continues to drag following an extremely lackluster Memorial Day weekend. Holdovers failed to gain any momentum, and Garfield and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga continue to disappoint. For what it’s worth, Garfield fell 42% for a $14 million 3-day but jumped to No. 1 in the charts. To date, the adaptation of the long-running comic series has earned $51.5M domestic and $152M worldwide, per Deadline.

Furiosa dropped to the third spot after taking a brutal -59% hit in its sophomore frame. George Miller’s costly prequel to Fury Road earned just $10.5M to raise its domestic cume to $49.7M. Internationally, the latest Mad Max chapter has collected $64.7M, bringing its worldwide total to $114.4M.

John Krasinski’s IF jumped to No. 2 with another $10.8M in its third weekend. The family adventure has earned $80.4M domestically and $138M worldwide.

Otherwise, a handful of smaller budget fare rounded out the Top 10, namely Haikyu! The Dumpster Battle ($3.5M), In a Violent Nature ($2.1M), Ezra ($1.1M), and Summer Camp ($1.06M).

All eyes now turn to Bad Boys 4: Ride or Die, the latest chapter in the popular Will Smith/Martin Lawrence franchise. The most recent entry, Bad Boys for Life, marked the last big hit before Covid rocked the box office in 2020, earning a solid $424.4M worldwide. Analysts expect a $50M+ opening for the action comedy.

Also opening is The Watchers, from first-time director Ishana Night Shyamalan, which hopes to snag enough horror fans to open in the late teens.
