Peaky Blinders Movie With Cillian Murphy Gets Director, Netflix Release

The Peaky Blinders movie is moving forward at Netflix.

Per Deadline, Tom Harper has signed on to direct the upcoming, still-untitled Peaky Blinders movie. Cillian Murphy will reprise his role as Thomas “Tommy” Shelby in the film, which is expected to begin filming later this year.

Additional casting has not yet been announced, meaning it is currently unclear whether or not anyone else from the show — such as Tommy Shelby’s brother, Arthur Shelby (played by Paul Anderson) — will also return.

What else do we know about Netflix’s Peaky Blinders movie?

The Peaky Blinders movie’s script was written by Steven Knight, who created the series. Caryn Mandabach, Knight, Murphy, and Guy Heeley are producing the film, while Harper, David Kosse, Jamie Glazebrook, Andrew Warren, and David Mason serve as executive producers.

Plot details remain under wraps at this time, though it is expected to be set during World War II.

“It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me. … It is very gratifying to be recollaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders,” Murphy said. This is one for the fans.”

Harper directed several episodes of the first season of Peaky Blinders, which premiered in 2013. He also directed 2014’s The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death, 2018’s Wild Rose, 2019’s The Aeronauts, and 2023’s Heart of Stone.

“When I first directed Peaky Blinders over 10 years ago, we didn’t know what the series would become, but we did know that there was something in the alchemy of the cast and the writing that felt explosive,” Harper said. “Peaky has always been a story about family — and so it’s incredibly exciting to be reuniting with Steve and Cillian to bring the movie to audiences across the world on Netflix.”

Knight added, “I’m genuinely thrilled that this movie is about to happen. It will be an explosive chapter in the Peaky Blinders story. No holds barred. Full-on Peaky Blinders at war.”

A release date for the Peaky Blinders movie has not yet been set by Netflix.
