The Lion King Theatrical Rerelease Date Set for Disney’s Animated Classic

Get ready to “feel the love tonight,” as Pride Lands will once again grace cinemas. To commemorate its 30th anniversary, The Lion King theatrical rerelease date has been set for one of Disney’s most popular and iconic animated movies.

A fan-favorite title from Disney’s impressive film catalog, The Lion King — an animated classic first introduced in 1994 — is coming back to theaters to celebrate its 30th anniversary. The animated feature is directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff based on a screenplay written by Irene Mecchi, Jonathan Roberts, and Linda Woolverton.

When is The Lion King theatrical rerelease date?

Set to bring the heartfelt story back for longtime fans and a new generation of moviegoers, Cinemark Theatres aims to celebrate The Lion King’s 30th anniversary with a theatrical rerelease starting July 12.

The talented voice cast behind The Lion King

Critically acclaimed for its storyline and animation, The Lion King also boasts a stellar voice cast. The film follows young lion Simba (Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Matthew Broderick), who — at a young age — lost his father Mufasa (James Earl Jones) due to his uncle Scar’s (voiced by Jeremy Irons) wicked schemes in order to emerge as the new king of Pride Lands.

Simba, who spent most of his life blaming himself for his father’s death, returns to his homeland — along with his friends Timon (Nathan Lane) and Pumbaa (Ernie Sabella) — to embrace his role as the rightful king and find out the truth behind his father’s murder.

Disney+’s brief logline for The Lion King reads: “A cub who can’t wait to be king finds his place in the ‘Circle of Life.’”

The rest of the voice cast includes Moira Kelly as Nala, Robert Guillaume as Rafiki, Rowan Atkinson as Zazu, Madge Sinclair as Queen Sarabi, Whoopi Goldberg as Shenzi, Cheech Marin as Banzai, and Jim Cummings as Ed.

The 1994 animated feature has spawned two direct-to-video sequels, including The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride (1998) and The Lion King 1½ (2004). In 2019, the franchise received a photorealistic animated remake, with Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and more serving as the film’s voice cast members. It will then release a prequel film, titled Mufasa: The Lion King, set to hit theaters on December 20, 2024.
