Box Office Results: Bad Boys 4 Cruises to the Top

Sony’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die made mincemeat of the competition in this week’s box office results, collecting a robust $56 million in its first week of release. That’s slightly less than the $62.5M debut of 2020’s Bad Boys for Life but a notch above the $46M collected by Michael Bay’s Bad Boys II in 2003 (unadjusted for inflation).

Worldwide, the fourth chapter launched with a massive $104.6M, besting even the loftiest projections. So much for the demise of movies, right? Give people what they want, and they will turn up in droves. In this case, audiences shelled out $8.2M for Imax, proving that the premium format remains the go-to option for many despite sky-high ticket prices.

Per the trade, Ride or Die now stands as Smith’s sixth-best domestic opening. For Lawrence, the latest entry marks the second-best opening of his career, behind only Bad Boys for Life. Audiences are clearly game for more adventures with this dynamic duo, awarding the pic an A- CinemaScore.

To put this opening in perspective, Bad Boys: Ride or Die has already earned as much as Furiosa ($58.7M) and will likely surpass The Fall Guy ($85.1M) by next week — so much for sequel fatigue.

Elsewhere, Peter Jackson’s first two Lord of the Rings films returned to theaters and collected a nice chunk of change for the precious franchise. Fellowship of the Ring snagged $2.44M from 1,529 theaters on Saturday, while The Two Towers hauled in $1.9M on Sunday. Return of the King explodes onto screens Monday.

Otherwise, the only other notable release was The Watchers from M. Night Shyamalan’s … daughter Ishana. The horror pic landed at No. 4 with $7M from 3,351 theaters, per Deadline.

This week, Pixar releases Inside Out 2, the sequel to its 2015 hit. That film grossed $850M worldwide. Many analysts believe the sequel will hit the bullseye with $80M, placing the animated comedy among Pixar’s Top 10 openers. Has the box office finally gotten back on track?
