The Boys Creator Explains Why It’s Ending, Says Spin-Offs ‘Should Continue’

With the arrival of The Boys Season 4, creator and showrunner Eric Kripke has confirmed that the series will end with Season 5 and revealed why the show is ending. But fans of The Boys’ universe need not worry as Gen V and other upcoming spin-offs will likely continue after the main series wraps up its story.

The Boys’ Eric Kripke reveals why it’s ending with Season 5

The Boys is among the most-watched shows on Amazon Prime Video. So, a decision to end the show surprised many fans, especially since Erik Kripke also had a five-season plan for The CW’s Supernatural, but it then went on for 15 seasons. However, Kripke revealed why he is pulling the plug on The Boys after Season 5.

Speaking with EW, he briefly said that five is “a good round number” to end a show. He elaborated:

“Part of it is such a wonky stupid screenwriter thing but three and five are the big magical numbers for writing. Three is movie acts, TV acts are five. Jokes are a runner of three for five. Five just seems like a good round number.”

According to him, five seasons are “enough to tell the story” and “bring it to a climax” without the show overstaying its welcome. He also revealed that The Boys Season 4’s events would also give the audience a hint that the show would end after the next season. Furthermore, he clarified the future of spin-offs like Gen V that are set in The Boys’ universe.

Gen V and other The Boys spin-offs will continue

Per Kripke, the ending of The Boys with Season 5 doesn’t mean that other shows in the franchise will also come to an end. Spin-offs such as Gen V and the upcoming The Boys: Mexico, will likely take the shared universe forward.

When asked about the spin-offs’ futures, Kripke told Variety:

“I think they can and should continue. The Boys story is about Butcher and Homelander and these two planets crashing into each other and this particular story doesn’t work without both of them. And you can only keep that going for so long.”

He concluded by saying that other stories could be told in the shared universe after the Butcher-Homelander narrative comes to an end.

Following The Boys Season 4, Amazon Prime Video is set to release Gen V Season 2 and the spin-off The Boys: Mexico.
