House of the Dragon Season 2 Viewership Falls From Season 1 Rating

While House of the Dragon Season 2 premiered on Max with an impressive viewership record, the second season still falls behind Season 1’s record-breaking rating.

Having premiered with a strong showing, House of the Dragon Season 2 proves that the Game of Thrones prequel is still a hit for the platform. However, considering Season 1’s record when it premiered back in 2022, Season 2 opened quite lower than expected.

House of the Dragon Season 2 scores good viewership record for HBO

The second season, which premiered on Sunday, June 16, has managed to accumulate a total of 7.8 million viewers across all platforms, according to Warner Bros. Discovery. Unfortunately, it was unable to top or even match the record set by Season 1, which garnered close to 10 million viewers on all platforms during its premiere night.

Season 1 had even set a record high for any HBO series since Game of Thrones concluded with an average of 29 million cross-platform viewers per episode. Due to the success of Season 1, House of the Dragon quickly received a Season 2 renewal.

A spin-off series to the beloved Game of Thrones franchise, House of the Dragon is based on the parts of George R. R. Martin’s 2018 book Fire & Blood. The series takes place almost 200 years before the events of the original one, chronicling the rise and fall of the Targaryen family.

The Season 2 cast includes Emma D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen, Olivia Cooke as Queen Alicent Hightower, Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower, and Eve Best as Princess Rhaenys Targaryen.

Rounding out the cast are Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon, Fabien Frankel as Ser Criston Cole, Sonoya Mizuno as Mysaria, Graham McTavish as Ser Harrold Westerling, Matthew Needham as Larys Strong, and Gayle Rankin as Alys Rivers, among others.

House of the Dragon Season 2 is now streaming on Max in the U.S.
