Beetlejuice Beetlejuice: Tim Burton Sequel Set to Open Venice Film Festival

Tim Burton’s long-awaited sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will be the opening film at this year’s Venice Film Festival.

The follow-up to Burton’s own beloved 1988 horror comedy movie is set to world premiere out-of-competition on August 28, 2024, at the Lido’s Palazzo del Cinema and will feature in-person appearances from the cast and crew involved.

That will be just days before the film’s official release date. The sequel is set to hit international theaters on September 4, 2024, and US theaters on September 6, 2024.

Tim Burton takes Beetlejuice Beetlejuice to Venice

Speaking about the film’s Venice premiere, Tim Burton said, “I’m very excited by this. It means a lot to me to have the world premiere of this film at the Venice Film Festival.”

“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice marks the long-awaited return of one of the most iconic characters of Tim Burton’s cinema, but also the happy confirmation of the extraordinary visionary talent and the masterly realization of one of the most fascinating auteurs of his time,” Venice artistic director Alberto Barbera said in a statement. “The Venice Biennale is honored and proud to host the world premiere of a work that features a surprising swing of creative imagination and driving hallucinatory rhythm.”

Burton is clearly enjoying getting back into his weirdo horror groove. He reteams with Wednesday star Jenna Ortega and writers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar for this movie.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice brings three generations of the Deetz clan back into their Winter River home after a sudden death in the family. Lydia’s ( Winona Ryder) rebellious teen daughter Astrid (Ortega) discovers a portal to the afterlife hidden in the basement. Naturally, the name of the mischievous spirit Beetlejuice is inevitably repeated three times. So it invites the scabby irritant to wreak havoc in the Deetz family home once again.

Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara, reprise their respective roles from the original movie. Newcomers in the sequel include Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, and Willem Dafoe.

The producers on the film are Burton, Marc Toberoff, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, and Tommy Harper. Burton, with Gough, Millar, Sara Desmond, Katterli Frauenfelder, Larry Wilson, Laurence Senelick and Brad Pitt will executive produce.
