Agatha All Along: Kathryn Hahn Explains Mare of Easttown Tribute
Similar to how WandaVision honored classic sitcoms, Agatha All Along pays tribute to a hit HBO show, Mare of Easttown.
What is Agatha All Along’s Connection to Mare of Easttown?
Agatha All Along opens with Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness stuck in Wanda Maximoff’s spell. She is now Agnes O’Connor, a police detective and star of the crime series Agnes of Westview. The fake procedural is an homage to Mare of Easttown, an HBO drama starring Kate Winslet.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hahn explained how her love for Mare of Easttown and crime TV shows inspired the opening scenes of Agatha All Along.
“I had binged Mare of Easttown when it came out, and I was obsessed with it,” Hahn said. “I loved it so much. I love — and so does [creator] Jac [Schaeffer] — a prestige crime drama that’s led by a strong woman who’s got a past. There’s a lot of templates in place for that show. I also love Broadchurch. I love so many of those. So this was definitely a love letter to that genre of show, for sure.”
Created by Jac Shaeffer, Agatha All Along sees Agatha as a powerless witch. With the help of a new coven, Agatha embarks on a dangerous quest down the legendary Witches’ Road in hopes of restoring her powers.
Besides Hahn, the Marvel series stars Joe Locke, Sasheer Zamata, Ali Ahn, Maria Dizzia, Paul Adelstein, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Okwui Okpokwasili, Debra Jo Rupp, Patti LuPone, and Aubrey Plaza.
The first two episodes are now streaming on Disney+.
