Daniel Day-Lewis Spotted on Set of Avelyn Years After Retiring From Acting

Daniel Day-Lewis will be returning to the world of acting after all. The legendary actor will star in the upcoming film Anemone, which will also be the directorial debut of his son, Ronan Day-Lewis.

The film was co-written by both Day-Lewis and his son, and is set to explore intricate relationships between fathers, sons and brothers as well as the dynamics of familial bonds.” Day-Lewis will star in the film alongside Sean Bean, Samanta Morton, Samuel Bottomley, and Safia Oakley-Green.

“We could not be more excited to partner with a brilliant visual artist in Ronan Day-Lewis on his first feature film alongside Daniel Day-Lewis as his creative collaborator,” Focus Features — who is distributing the film — chairman Peter Kujawski said in a statement. “They have written a truly exceptional script, and we look forward to bringing their shared vision to audiences alongside the team at Plan B.”

Original Story: Despite retiring from acting more than seven years ago, Daniel Day-Lewis was recently seen on the set of a small film, kicking up rumors that the legendary actor had potentially decided to step back into the world of acting.

Day-Lewis was spotted by the Daily Mail in Manchester, England, this past week — on the set of upcoming film, Avelyn. Day-Lewis could be seen sporting an almost handle bar-esque facial hair setup, while riding a motorcycle through a street with actor Sean Bean sitting behind him. Both actors were dressed in fairly padded-up and layered outfits.

According to the Daily Mail, the scenes in particular “looked action packed,” although there was nothing else reported on what exactly was happening in the scene. As of now, it’s unclear whether or not Day-Lewis has actually returned to the world of acting, or if he is simply popping up in a cameo.

When did Daniel Day-Lewis retire?

Day-Lewis announced he was retiring from acting in 2017 following his role as Reynolds Woodcock in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread. This was not, however, the first time that Day-Lewis retired from Hollywood, as he made a similar announcement in 1997 when he decided to take up a new profession as a shoe-maker before he then returned to make Gangs of New York, There Will Be Blood, Lincoln, and a number of other films.

Day-Lewis is seen by many as one of the greatest performers in the history of cinema. Throughout his career, Day-Lewis has won three Academy Awards, four BAFTA Awards, three Screen Actors Guild Awards, and two Golden Globe Awards. Known for his method acting, Day-Lewis starred in high-profile films such as My Left Foot, Gangs of New York, There Will Be Blood, Lincoln, The Last of the Mohicans, and more.
