Sherlock Series With Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman Has ‘A Future,’ Says Producer

The BBC Sherlock series with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman has “a future,” says one of the show’s producers.

Sherlock premiered in 2010. The series had four three-episode seasons, along with a special “The Abominable Bride” episode that aired between the third and fourth seasons, before it ultimately concluded in 2017. Cumberbatch played Sherlock Holmes in the series, while Dr. John Watson was played by Freeman.

While Sherlock presumably ended after Season 4, producer Sue Vertue says the series will likely return at some point in the future.

Sherlock producer Sue Vertue says the series has a future

“We love that show and there is a future for it,” she told Deadline. “One day. Maybe. If everyone wants to do it…I’ve still got the set in storage somewhere, which is probably rotten, to be honest with you. It’s just getting everybody aligned, it’s getting the actors to want to do it.”

Mark Gatiss, who co-created the series with Steven Moffatt and also plays Mycroft Holmes, has previously spoken about wanting to make a Sherlock film with Cumberbatch and Watson.

He told The Guardian in 2023, “People think you can just wave a wand. It’s incredibly difficult to get people interested and get films made. I remember talking to Edgar Wright about Ant-Man, into which he put eight years of his life and then didn’t make. Eight years is not short of a decade. Add a few of those up, you’re dead and you’ve made four films. But, also, we were genuinely interested in making them for TV because we love TV. We would love to make a Sherlock movie. It’s the natural thing to do.”

Gatiss also mentioned wanting to make a film when speaking to Deadline at the 2024 Olivier Awards; however, similar to Vertue’s comment, he said that “trying to get everyone together is very difficult.”

All four seasons of Sherlock are currently streaming on Hulu.
