We Live in Time Reviews Lead to Notable Rotten Tomatoes & Metacritic Scores

We Live in Time is set to be released in select theaters on Friday, October 11, after premiering at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival on September 6, 2024. The romance-drama movie has garnered mostly positive reviews from critics, resulting in notable scores on both Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic.

We Live in Time reviews praise Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh

Directed by John Crowley (The Goldfinch) from a screenplay by Nick Payne (The Last Letter from Your Lover), We Live in Time weaves the story of the relationship between Tobias (Andrew Garfield), a sales representative, and Almut (Florence Pugh), a chef. ComingSoon’s own Jonathan Sim hailed the movie as “a beautiful tale that feels true to real life, absurd in all the right ways, and filled with grounded, heartbreaking performances.”

Glenn Whipp of the Los Angeles Times wrote, “It’s cute. And it’s so easy to be taken with these two warm, assured actors that the first hour of We Live in Time flies by, a procession of meet-cutes, feisty squabbles, passionate sex, sad faces, chocolate-covered biscuits being balanced on Alma’s pregnant belly in the bathtub and candles — so, so many candles.”

The Hollywood Reporter’s Michael Rechtshaffen observed, “While We Live in Time and its subject matter might not lay claim to the audience uplift of Crowley’s Oscar-nominated Brooklyn, seldom has such an unflinchingly honest take on mortality felt so transcendently life-affirming.”

The critical reaction to We Live in Time is not exclusively positive. Manohla Dargis of The New York Times praised Garfield and Pugh’s performances but criticized the film for turning “Almut into yet another beatifically suffering woman.”

We Live in Time Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic scores revealed

At the time of writing, We Live in Time has an 82% approval rating on the review aggregating platform Rotten Tomatoes after 65 reviews. Meanwhile, it has a score of 61 out of 100 on Metacritic after 21 reviews, denoting a “generally favorable” response. The latter site utilizes a weighted average to rate movies and TV shows. It remains to be seen how the general audience responds to We Live in Time. If its run in the limited theaters goes well, it can potentially be up for a wider release.
