Maria Movie Poster Previews Angelina Jolie’s Acclaimed Performance in Netflix Biopic
Netflix has shared the official Maria movie poster for acclaimed filmmaker Pablo Larraín‘s newest female-centered biographical drama, starring Oscar winner Angelina Jolie as she portrays opera singer Maria Callas. Following its world premiere at the 2024 Venice International Film Festival, the film will now arrive in select theaters on November 27, followed by its Netflix debut on December 11.
“The film follows the American-Greek soprano as she retreats to Paris after a glamorous and tumultuous life in the public eye. Maria reimagines the legendary soprano in her final days as the diva reckons with her identity and life,” reads the official synopsis.
Who is involved in the Maria movie?
Maria is directed by Larraín from a screenplay written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight. The cast also includes Pierfrancesco Favino (The Hummingbird), Alba Rohrwacher (La Chimera), Haluk Bilginer (Winter Sleep), Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Power of the Dog), and Valeria Golino (Portrait of a Lady on Fire). It is produced by Juan de Dios Larraín, Lorenzo Mieli, and Jonas Dornbach. The film is a production by The Apartment, Fabula, and Komplizen & Fremantle.
Since the film had its world premiere, it currently holds a Tomatometer rating of 77% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 64 reviews. This marks Jolie’s first major lead turn since 2021’s Those Who Wish Me Dead. Prior to Maria, Larraín previously directed 2016’s Jackie starring Natalie Portman as Jackie Kennedy, and 2021’s Spencer as Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana, which each earned Portman and Stewart an Oscar nomination for Best Actress for their respective leading performances.
