Gundam Movie Finds Director for Live-Action Adaptation
A major update in the long-in-development Gundam movie has arrived, with Deadline reporting that the project has officially tapped a director to work on the film, which is now no longer involved with Netflix.
Who is directing the Gundam movie?
Jim Mickle, best known for being the showrunner of the Netflix series Sweet Tooth, has been tapped to write and direct the upcoming project. Pretty much everything about the film is unknown as of now, but Deadline did report that the film is planning on beginning production in 2025.
Alongside the news of the Gundam movie finding a director, Deadline also reports that that both Netflix and the film’s former director are no longer involved. Previously, a Gundam live-action movie adaptation had been in the works from Legendary, with Netflix and director Jordan Vogt-Roberts reportedly connected dating back to 2021.
However, Deadline mentions that neither party are involved with the film anymore, so it’s unclear whether or not Legendary has partnered with someone else, or will release the film to theaters instead.
The Gundam franchise is one of the most popular anime franchises in history. Originally debuting in 1979, Gundam was created by Hajime Yatate and Yoshiyuki Tomino, and largely follows the story of various military groups that use gigantic mobile suits (known as Gundam in part) to battle against one another.
The franchise has gone on to spawn more than 50 television series, various films and OVAs, manga, novels, video games, and an entire line of plastic model kits known as Gunpla, which has dominated the Japanese toy market since its inception. Gundam is also largely seen as ushering in and defining the “mecha anime” genre, which is known for its mech or robot characters.
