Back to the Future Musical Movie Was Pitched to Universal by Robert Zemeckis

Oscar-winning director Robect Zemeckis expressed his desire to helm a Back to the Future musical movie. This comes over four years after the iconic 1985 sci-fi comedy movie was adapted into a West End musical play by composer Alan Silvestri and songwriter Glen Ballard.

What did Robert Zemeckis say about the Back to the Future Musical movie?

Even though Zemeckis has been vocal about his objections to Back to the Future getting a modern remake or sequel, it looks like the acclaimed filmmaker is still open to revisiting the franchise on this one condition. During a recent interview, Zemeckis revealed that directing a Back to the Future musical movie was something he would like to do. He confirmed that he actually tried to pitch the potential project to Universal Pictures, but was ultimately turned down.

“I would like to do the Back to the Future, the musical. Just like [Mel] Brooks did The Producers,” Zemeckis said (via Happy Sad Confused podcast). “I would love to do that. I think that would be great… I floated that out to the folks at Universal. They don’t get it. So, nothing I can do.”

Back to the Future was written and directed by Zemeckis. Starring Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Crispin Glover, and Thomas F. Wilson, the film centered around teenager Marty McFly who suddenly got transported back to the past, where he met younger versions of his parents. Due to his accidental interference, he ends up messing up his parents’ love story. In order to prevent himself from getting erased from existence, he must find a way to make his parents fall in love with each other while also trying to figure out how to get back to the present. After its massive success at the box office with a current worldwide gross of $388 million, it was followed by two more installments, which were both equally well-loved by audiences.
