The Fly: New Movie Set in Universe of David Cronenberg’s Horror Classic Is in the Works

A new movie based on David Cronenberg’s The Fly is in the works.

Directed and co-written by Cronenberg, The Fly was released in 1986. Based on the 1958 movie of the same name directed by Kurt Neumann (which, itself, was based on a 1957 short story of the same name by George Langelaan), the body horror classic stars Jeff Goldblum as Seth Brundle and Geena Davis as Veronica “Ronnie” Quaife.

Per Deadline, 20th Century Studios and Chernin Entertainment are now moving forward with another film that will be set in the same universe as Cronenberg’s The Fly.

What do we know about the new The Fly movie?

The new movie is being written and directed by Nikyatu Jusu, who previously made 2022’s Nanny starring Anna Diop and Michelle Monaghan.

Plot details remain under wraps; however, according to Deadline, it will not be a straightforward remake of Cronenberg’s movie and instead will just be “set in the universe.”

There was already a sequel to Cronenberg’s The Fly, The Fly II, that was released in 1989. Directed by Chris Walas, the movie follows the adult son, played by Eric Stoltz, of Veronica and Seth’s child. It received negative reviews from critics when it was released.

“In a remake of the 1958 cult classic, a young scientist transforms himself into a fly in an experiment gone horribly wrong,” the synopsis for Cronenberg’s movie reads. “Seth Brundle, a brilliant but eccentric scientist attempts to woo investigative journalist Veronica Quaife by offering her a scoop on his latest research in the field of matter transportation, which against all the expectations of the scientific establishment have proced succesful. Up to a point, Brundle thinks he has ironed out the last problem when he successfully transports a living creature, but when he attempts to teleport himself a fly enters on the transmission booths, and Brundle finds he is a changed man.”

Peter Chernin and Jenno Topping will produce Jusu’s new The Fly movie, which does not yet have a release date. Cronenberg’s The Fly, meanwhile, is currently streaming on Hulu.
