New Star Wars Trilogy Will See Daisy Ridley Reportedly Return as Rey

The newly announced Star Wars trilogy will reportedly see Daisy Ridley return as Rey.

On Thursday, November 9, 2024, Deadline reported that Simon Kinberg had been tapped to write a new trilogy of Star Wars movies. Kinberg, known for his work on the X-Men franchise, will produce the films alongside Kathleen Kennedy.

Whether or not this trilogy will continue the Skywalker Saga appears to be unclear at this time. Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr. noted, “I heard this will comprise Episodes 10-12 of The Skywalker Saga that began with George Lucas’s 1977 first film” while simultaneously saying, “Insiders disputed my intel that Kinberg will continue that storyline, saying this instead will begin a new saga, and sit alongside percolating Star Wars projects with James Mangold, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Taika Waititi, and Donald Glover.”

The Hollywood Reporter’s Borys Kit’s sources said that “the new story is not meant to be a continuation of the Skywalker Saga” and will instead focus on “brand new characters and a new story.”

What are the recent reports about Daisy Ridley’s Rey returning in the new Star Wars trilogy?

According to Jeff Sneider’s The InSneider, Ridley will reprise her role as Rey Skywalker in the new movies. She will be “positioned as the Obi-Wan of the new trilogy.”

Whether or not that means the trilogy serves as a direct continuation of the Skywalker Saga is still unclear, though Sneider said he’s “willing to bet that these three films will be positioned as Episodes X, XI, and XII.”

It’s also unclear what, should the reports of Ridley’s return be true, this means for Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s Star Wars movie. In 2023, it was announced that Obaid-Chinoy is directing a movie set after the events of Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker that would feature Ridley’s Rey as she builds a new Jedi Order. Steven Knight had been tapped to write the film, though he dropped out of the project last month.

Neither Disney nor Lucasfilm has officially commented on the matter at this time.
