Dexter: Original Sin Trailer Hints Dexter Isn’t Dead
The first full trailer of Dexter: Original Sin teases that the eponymous serial killer, portrayed by Michael C. Hall, might not be dead. The last time viewers saw Dexter Morgan on screen was in the final episode of Dexter: New Blood (2021-2022), in which it appeared he was fatally shot. However, given what the trailer hints, that probably wasn’t the case.
Original Sin trailer teases how Michael C. Hall’s Dexter Morgan could still be alive
Dexter Morgan could still be alive even after the events of the Dexter: New Blood finale.
In the Original Sin trailer, it is indicated that Hall’s Dexter will serve as the inner voice of the younger version of the character, played by Patrick Gibson. The trailer also shows what seems like the immediate aftermath of Harrison (Jack Alcott) shooting his father. Dexter is taken to the Emergency Room of a hospital where the doctors work on him. Further, the trailer indicates that the entire narrative of Original Sin is effectively Dexter’s life flashing before his eyes as he lies on the emergency room bed.
After New Blood ended, showrunner Clyde Phillips stated in no certain terms that Dexter was dead. “I have three words for you: Dexter is dead,” he told Deadline. “I wouldn’t do that to the audience. It would be dishonest. Here, there is no question that this is the finale of Dexter. Dexter is dead,” Phillips added.
It was initially reported that New Blood would receive another season, but those plans were scrapped. Instead, Paramount announced a new show, Dexter: Resurrection, at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2024, with Hall slated to return as the titular anti-hero in the project. When asked how he would reprise his role as Dexter in Resurrection if his character is supposed to be dead, Hall told Variety, “I don’t know what I am authorized to say other than, it’s really cold out there.”
Resurrection has a tentative Summer 2025 release window. According to Hall, it will pick up “right where we left off.” His above-mentioned comment about the cold is likely a reference to the freezing winter weather of the fictional small town of Iron Lake, New York, where New Blood takes place.
Original Sin is scheduled for release on Paramount+ with Showtime on December 13, 2024, and on Showtime on December 15. It will be the third entry in the Dexter TV franchise after Dexter (2006-2013) and New Blood.
