Peacock has canceled Mr. Throwback and will not develop Season 2 of the series. Following its premiere, the show received modestly positive responses. The first season currently has an 86% score from critics on the review aggregating site Rotten Tomatoes. However, on Metacritic, which uses a weighted average to rate a project, the show has accumulated a score of 57 out of 100, denoting a “mixed or average” response.

Along with Mr. Throwback, Peacock has canceled Based on a True Story, a dark comedy thriller TV series created by Craig Rosenberg and featuring Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina, after two seasons. The first season of Based on a True Story debuted on June 8, 2023, followed by the second season on November 21, 2024.

Mr Throwback was developed in the style of a mockumentary by Daniel Libman, David Caspe, and Matthew Libman. Caspe previously created ABC’s Happy Endings, the Showtime comedy Black Monday, and the NBC situational comedies Marry Me and Kenan. The plot of Mr. Throwback revolves around Adam Pally’s Danny Grossman, a memorabilia dealer navigating terrible circumstances. Danny was a talented basketball player when he was younger, but those days are long behind him. When he encounters a former teammate who’s now a basketball superstar, he tries to integrate into the other man’s life.

Curry portrays this basketball superstar, a fictionalized version of himself. Some of the other cast members are Ego Nwodim as Kimberly Gregg, Ayden Mayeri as Samantha Judlow, and Tracy Letts as Mitch Grossman. Notably, Curry has also portrayed himself in the HBO series Ballers and voiced himself in The Simpsons and Family Guy.
