Thunderbolts* & Sinners Hold Strong at Global Box Office

With Thunderbolts* and Sinners leading the box office, their latest weekend numbers have sparked comparisons across genres and franchises. While Thunderbolts* posted a notable drop in its second weekend, its overall hold remains in line with past MCU titles. Meanwhile, Sinners continues its strong theatrical run, surpassing key milestones for horror films in their fourth weekends.

Thunderbolts* wins second weekend at box office

Disney and Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts* earned $33 million in its second weekend, marking a 55% drop from its $74.3 million debut.

Its domestic total stands at $128.4 million, with an international gross of $143.7 million, bringing the global total to $272.1 million (via Box Office Mojo). The 10-day earnings trail Captain America: Brave New World by $12.7 million but are $10.3 million ahead of Eternals at the same stage. The film currently plays in 4,330 theaters, with analysts expecting it to benefit from Memorial Day and increased summer traffic.

Thunderbolts* shows a similar second-weekend decline to Shang-Chi (-54%) and holds stronger than Brave New World (-68%) (via Deadline). The marketplace generated an estimated $86.7 million over the weekend, marking a 10% drop from the same period last year.

Sinners inches closer to $300 million at global box office

Warner Bros.’ Sinners grossed $21.1 million in its fourth weekend, down 36% from the prior weekend.

Its Friday earnings were $6.5 million, and the film now has a domestic total of $214.4 million (via Box Office Mojo). International earnings stand at $68.9 million, bringing the worldwide total to $283.3 million. It surpassed the fourth weekends of The Sixth Sense ($20 million) and It ($16.9 million), and trails The Blair Witch Project ($24.3 million)

Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan, is playing in 3,502 theaters. It continues to perform well ahead of other horror films in their fourth weekends and will occupy IMAX 70MM auditoriums between May 15–21. The title has also maintained steady weekday revenue since release, contributing to its strong hold over a month in theaters.

Both Thunderbolts* and Sinners continue to perform as summer tentpoles ahead of upcoming competition like Final Destination: Bloodlines.
