Eddie Murphy returns as Prince Akeem in the Coming 2 America trailer; the film is set to hit Amazon Prime in March after a pandemic induced delay.
The Coming 2 America trailer is here. Eddie Murphy returns as Prince Akeem Joffer, the prince of Zamunda. Joining him are returning cast members Arsenio Hall, John Amos, and James Earl Jones. New additions to the cast include Kiki Layne (The Old Guard), Leslie Jones (Saturday Night Live), and Garcelle Beauvais (The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills). The sequel is set after the events of the first film that came out in 1988.
As Murphy's prince is about to become the king of Zamunda, he finds out he has a son (Jermaine Fowler) in America. His father's dying wish is that he find his son and groom him to become the future king. The film is set to release on Amazon Prime on March 5 after being bought by the streamer during the coronavirus pandemic. Amazon acquired the rights for a whopping $125 million. Paramount, the film's original studio, will still handle distribution in international territories.
Today, the Coming 2 America movie trailer has been released by Amazon Prime Video. The trailer features the return of beloved characters, including both Murhpy's and Hall's multiple personas they played in the original film. Jones' King Joffer expresses his dying wish in the trailer, prompting Prince Akeem and his friend Seemi to return to America, much to their reluctance. Check it out in the space below.
The film is another dose of nostalgia for fans of the original. Murphy's return as Akeem is exciting - his role in the original film is one of the comedian's earliest and most loved. The return of band Sexual Chocolate, for which Murphy plays lead singer Randy Watson, and Clarence, the owner of the barber shop, will have fans excited to see what's in store for Prince Akeem and Seemi this time around. All of the new characters introduced in the trailer are just a preview of who the pair will be meeting on their return to America.
The trailer's updated visuals are also exciting - there's clearly a bigger budget this time around, with an updated kingdom of Zamunda and a gold plated private jet for Prince Akeem and Seemi's trip to America. The Coming 2 America trailer focuses more on showing off the expansive cast of characters rather than delving into just what kind of hijinks Murphy and co. will get up to. There's sure to be a lot of tension while Akeem tries to convince his son, a born-and-bred Queens native, to give up his life and become a royal in Zamunda. Just how Akeem convinces his son to do so remains to be seen, but Coming 2 America will have all the answers when it hits Amazon Prime in March.
