Halloween Kills It at the Domestic Box Office

To the surprise of no one, Halloween Kills topped the domestic box office. https://i0.wp.com/storage.waploaded.com/images/5fc53372e6d248422ce416d478740c7d.jpgTo the surprise of everyone, Halloween Kills scared up a $50 million debut from 3,705 locations despite the day-and-date release on Peacock’s streaming service. Per Deadline, the slasher pic held extremely well on Saturday, typically the day of death for most horror pics with less than stellar reviews and exit polls, where it dropped just 25 percent to earn $17.2 million.

The figures for Halloween Kills tops A Quiet Place Part II’s ($47.5 million) opening over the summer and is now the best opening for an R-rated pic during the pandemic, topping The Suicide Squad’s $26.2 million. Also, the strong start places Halloween inside the Top 10 best October openings; and ranks as the third-best horror debut in the month behind 2018’s Halloween ($76.2 million) and 2011’s Paranormal Activity 3 ($52.5 million).

Elsewhere, in its second weekend, No Time to Die dipped 56% and earned another $24.3M to bring its domestic haul to $99.5 million. Worldwide, Daniel Craig’s grand finale as 007 has collected $348.3 million, bringing its global tally to a massive $447.5 million, and is close to surpassing Godzilla vs. Kong as the No. 2 Hollywood movie of 2021, just behind Universal’s F9.

Speaking of global figures, Venom Let There Be Carnage earned $62.3M from 44 overseas markets to bring its international cume to $115.6 million. That couple with a third weekend $16.5 million at the domestic box office has the superhero pic sitting on a $283.7 million total haul.

Finally, Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel, starring Matt Damon, Adam Driver and Ben Affleck, managed just $4.8 million from 3,065 locations. Clearly, older audiences aren’t flocking to theaters just yet, though this one was always going to be a tough sell given its subject matter.

Next week comes the much-awaited arrival of Warner Bros/Legendary’s Dune, which has amassed $129.3 million worldwide thus far and is expected to do big business domestically.
